4-Phases of Website Design Development
A lot of things need to be taken into consideration when creating the look and feel of the website. To help you not get overwhelmed with the process of website design development, we have divided it into four phases.
Phase 1: Information gathering
- The focus of the first step is to gather all the necessary information for the project. As your design team, we will carefully analyze your requirements, define the website purpose, and determine the goals of the website. We will work together to brainstorm about how business goals can be reached with the aid of a good website.
- We will research your target audience. What is the group of people that you would like to reach first? What is their age, interests, and habits? Answering these questions will help you determine the best design style for your website.
- We must get acquainted with your website content. What kind of information will the target audience be looking for on the website? Is it specific information regarding a product or a service, online shopping, or something else? The content and design are directly interconnected with each other.
- After gathering all the information, we will then move on to step 2 creating a draft project schedule with a rough plan.
Phase 2: Planning and strategy, wireframing
- Using the information gathered from phase one, it is time to put it together and make a detailed website plan. At this point, a site map is developed. The site map is the list of all main pages or topic areas of the website, including sub-pages or topics, if applicable. This map will clarify what content will be on the website and will help to understand the navigational structure. The future customers are end-users of the website – their journey has to be simple as possible. This basis of an easy-to-navigate website is an excellent interface.
- You will also submit all written content for the internal pages of the website. The goal is to create content that ranks well with Google and persuades your target audience.
- If this is an ecommerce website, you will submit all images, descriptions, variations, and prices for each item. (Up to 10 products)
Phase 3: Graphical design
- As part of the design process, it is essential to apply such visual elements carefully and tastefully as the logo and brand colors, to strengthen the brand identity on the website. During the design phase, we request logo vector files, font names, brand colors, images, videos, etc. We will also need all social media links, mailing list login information (MailChimp) etc.
- This step usually requires a lot of communication – e.g. email exchange, collaboration via content sharing services (Dropbox).
- Ideas exchange and brainstorming are crucial at this step.
Phase 4: Development/build
- At this point, the design itself will begin. First, the homepage is developed, followed by a “shell” for the interior pages. The shell serves as a template for the content pages of the website, as it contains the main menu of the website. After the template is created, we will then begin designing internal pages with content.
- During this phase, elements such as interactive contact forms and ecommerce shopping carts will be implemented and made functional.
- Communication will remain constant at this step. You will see changes applied to the website so that all the necessary corrections are made easily.
- Once the development is finished, everything needs to be fully tested.
Website Design FAQs
Here are some of our most frequently answered Web Design questions and answers.
How much do you charge to build a website?
There’s not one single answer to this question. A website design is quoted based on the needs of each project. Every website is unique and requires different components; we design and develop custom websites for your business. We’ll ask many questions, assess your needs, and give you a price quote based on that assessment. Our website design package starts at $5,000. Please get in touch with us at email@example.com to begin the quote process started!
How long will it take to complete my website?
Our standard timeline is 6-8 weeks to complete a website but this depends on the project since each client sets the size and pace of any project. How much input you can provide during the initial stages, your feedback, how soon the content is provided – all this affects the speed of completion. The functionality and revisions required will also play a role in your timeline.
Am I required to be in Birmingham to work with you?
No! We work with clients all over the world and can communicate by email, scheduled calls, and Zoom meetings.
Will I be able to update the site myself when it’s finished?
Yes! We love it when our clients take control of their websites and learn to manage the content on their websites. You will have full access to the backend of your new WordPress website upon migration to make simple text updates and photograph changes, and new products and pricing can easily be changed on your own. However, we do recommend a professional (developer) to complete more complex changes and maintenance such as plugin updates, design or structure changes, and complex functionality requirements. We provide hourly tutorials upon completion of your website at $150 per hour if you are interested in learning how to navigate through the backend to make minor updates independently.
Will you maintain our website for us?
We can help maintain your website, or you can do so yourself with the more minor changes. The choice is 100% up to you. We provide on-going support for many of our clients but it is not mandatory and you will not be charged a monthly fee. You can contact us as you require updates to your website and we will provide an hourly quote based on your requests.
Do you provide website hosting and domain?
No, you will be responsible for website hosting and domain. This will ensure that you will have full access to your website upon migration. However, we can recommend hosting packages to you and we will complete the migration to your new hosting included in our website design package pricing.
Will my website be mobile-friendly?
Absolutely! Having a mobile-friendly website is more important than ever! We work hard to ensure your website is responsive to modern devices and browsers.
How much input do I have in the website design process?
A lot! Your input and feedback are crucial to this website design and development process. We’ll start with a lot of questions about your needs, your likes, your wants and work with you to develop just the right look and functionality. We also request you to provide sample websites before we begin your project. Remember this is your website and we need your help and direction as to your final vision. We’re a team and look forward to hearing your ideas.
Who writes the text/content for the website?
We require that you provide all of the text content for your website. You are the expert on your business, so it’s always best if it comes from you. If you need assistance, we have a copywriter on our team who can help clean up or write original content for you at an additional cost of $120 per hour.
Do you only create WordPress websites?
No! Although, WordPress is the best content management system that powers more than 42% of the world wide web. Its huge market share is due to its flexibility and ease of use. From minimal, informational, template websites that are to the point – to a more custom website with specific functionality to achieve your website goals, we’ve worked on all kinds of websites and worked with countless industries all on WP. We suggest Shopify for small to mid-size companies with yearly revenue of $250,000 or less.
What if I need help on my site down the road?
We are only an email away! We’re here to help you as much or as little as you need, and we’ll be available even beyond the launch of your new website. At C Kinion Design, we pride ourselves on building long-term business relationships with our clients.
